Day eight

Another day of driving - the distances here really are something. Left Halifax after a bit of uncertainty about whether to go on a whale watching trip, but decided against doing it there in favour of doing it tomorrow at a place called Digby - more on that later. Had to decide whether to do the East or West Coast and chose West as it looked more scenic. Drove out along the crinkly bits to Peggy's Cove, a beautiful, if busy spot outside Halifax. The coast is spectacular, almost unbelievably so. Again you end up driving past places you'd love to stay, except its only 10.30am. The weather is so good now too - but imagine it under six feet of snow. Then hit the highway as it takes forever if you drive all the coast. Came off and stopped at a town called Lunenberg - beautiful colonial town with a harbor and toyed with staying, but when you look at the map you tend to think "Push On." So I did to Digby, which turns out to be a fishing town. The two motels were OK, but the one with a view was full, so I drove a few miles on to Smith's Cove and I am staying in a Victorian Inn, at a very reasonable rate too, now that the season is over. However, it turns out that the whale watching from Digby involves a 10 mile drive and two ferry trips to an outlying island, and it is only in the afternoons. So that's a bust. And sitting in the restaurant the place mat was a map, and I suddenly realised that the road network doesn't quite connect and to get back to the main highway involves driving halfway back down Nova Scotia! So another day of driving lies ahead - but I am enjoying it. At times I am the only car on the road. Canadian radio is good, if odd - in the middle of the music this afternoon there was a special announcement - that Mrs Steinway's school bus was running 20 minutes late. I expect to spend one more day in Canada then back to the US on Thursday sometime.
