Day nine

Well, some days surprise you. Example 1) Planned to get up early this morning to catch the sunrise over the bay, but when I peered out of  the window it was very foggy. Went back to bed, but took a quick jog to the beach right before breakfast and it was gloriously misty with the sun just breaking through. Ten minutes later and I would have missed it. Example 2) I expected to spend all of today driving and to end up just back over the border in the US - plan being to get to a place called Boothbay Harbor by Friday to try for a third time to whale watch. Well, I drove from 9am to 6pm with two breaks to gas up, so about 8 hours and a bit - I have a blister on my heel from the gas pedal. But about an hour short of the border I stopped to top off the gas and it was a service garage, eg someone pumps the gas for you. I asked if there was anywhere nice to stay nearby, and she said that a town called St Andrews by the Sea was 20 miles away and the only place before the border to recommend. On the spur of the moment I decided to skip crossing over and see what it was like and... perfecto. It's the town by the water I've been looking for the entire trip, a main street near a jetty and all decent too.. I can't tell you how happy I am after spending several hours here. Had a few drinks in a waterfront bar, then a great salad by the harbour, then walked out along the jetty to see the final sunset. And best - I have booked to go whale watching tomorrow morning, so the Boothbay Harbor option isn't such a necessity. It really is a wonderful little town, I would live here at the drop of a hat. Call me contented.
