I drove to Bar Harbor as planned - again a pleasant drive along the shore, including a sailors and fishermen's cemetery as a stop. Bar Harbor (which is on Mount Desert Island) proved way too commercial for my tastes - Morecambe + endless art galleries and knick knack shops. A nice old harbour town, I might give it a second chance driving out, but it was absolutely crowded this weekend. So, I drove on, checked several motels, some too cheap (!really!), some without wifi and after pondering I finally decided to try the next town, Northeast Harbor. That's a bingo. Much more to my liking, a nice harbor hotel, and a main street. Next spent the afternoon doing what the guy at reception called the Reader's Digest version of Acadia National Park (which is virtually the whole island, with the towns and resorts living along the harbors/coastal fringe) - so drove to the summit of Cadillac Mountain, then did the loop drive along the Atlantic coast. Got crowded later, especially at a popular spot called Sandy Beach which is exactly that, no more, no less, but I guess it is unusual? Without a doubt the best bit was a part of the park called Schooner Cove, which proved to be precisely the rocks and pine trees clinging on for life that I wanted to see (or is it photograph?) And so I sit on the balcony of another restaurant as the sun sets, trying to cope with the fact that today is only day five...Tomorrow I head towards Canada - already I keep meeting people who I think are French and have to double take.

Proof I was there (the light is dappled by trees)
Just, simply, beautiful
