Day six

Tonight I am in Machias, Maine, not too far from the Canadian border. Small town, with two motels, one of which was sold out, so feeling lucky. Started the day driving to Southwest Harbor and around the rest of the coast of Mount Desert Island. Particularly liked a spot consisting of one motel, one restaurant and a gas station called Seawall - I would have stayed there. I saw much evidence of the phenomenon of Sunday morning churchgoing - roads blocked with parked cars around churches. Weather remains splendid, and after lunch I spent the afternoon on the coast in the sun, at lighthouses, before driving North on 1. Detoured into Acadia NP to drive the Schoodic scenic byway - pretty and pretty empty too. Reminds me of Oregon. Tried really hard to find somewhere to stay near there, but there weren't many places, and those that were were full or seemed a bit too rundown. As I drive I muse away to myself - it is odd to think how different life would be if I'd been born in Pleasant Harbor? Why do so many Americans drive with their headlights on? Drove on and to the next town, Mibridge - nice motel, but unfortunately no restaurant in town was open on a Sunday. I had to drive another 30 miles to Machias and luckily the other  motel in town had rooms. It's getting quite desolate out there - I am used to the emptiness of the West, but I forget that the East has big and empty areas too. Tomorrow Canada!

Sunday morning in America
 Seawall
 Steps to the sea
 Bass Harbor light
Fallen tree
Sometimes the driving is just pure fun (24mph due North)
Schoodic point
Lovely, isn't it?
Self portrait- not bad for 51 when I look happy

  1. For a while, auto insurers offered discounts for cars that have "daytime running lights"--our Toyota minivan has them--under the theory that such lights lessened the chance of head-on collisions. Turned out not to be the case, of course. . .
